Questions & answers

The questions homeowners actually ask.

The questions homeowners and landlords actually ask us, in the order they tend to come up — from "which boiler?" through grants and cover to what happens after we've finished.

Stage

Choosing what you need

Which boiler should I choose — combi, system or traditional?

It depends on your home and how you use hot water. A combi heats water on demand with no tank and suits many homes; a system boiler works with a cylinder and is often better for larger houses with several bathrooms; a traditional heat-only boiler suits homes with an existing tank-and-cylinder set-up. We fit Worcester Greenstar boilers from £1,895 and will size the right one for your home during a free survey.

Should I consider a heat pump instead of a new boiler?

It's well worth looking at. We install Vaillant aroTherm plus and aroTherm split air-source heat pumps, and domestic installations qualify for 0% VAT plus, for eligible homes, a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. A heat pump has to be designed and sized to your home to perform, so we start with a free site survey and heat-loss assessment before we quote.

Can I get a price without booking a visit?

Yes. Use our online boiler quote tool for an instant indicative price, or show us the job over a live video call with MyVideoCaller — often we can advise or quote from that alone. When it's time to firm things up, we confirm the detail with a proper survey before anything is agreed.

Stage

Cost, grants & VAT

How much is a new boiler?

Our Worcester Greenstar boiler installations start from £1,895. The final figure depends on the boiler type, your home and whether any extra work (like a power flush or new controls) is sensible — we'll set it all out clearly in a written quote, with nothing added later.

What grants and VAT savings apply to heat pumps and air conditioning?

Domestic heat pump and air conditioning installations qualify for 0% VAT. On top of that, eligible homes can claim the £7,500 government Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant toward an air-source heat pump. We'll talk you through exactly what applies to your property so you know the real cost.

Stage

The work itself

Who actually carries out the work — your own engineers or sub-contractors?

Always our own engineers. We never sub-contract our installation work to self-employed fitters — every gas job is done by a Gas Safe registered engineer from our team, six of whom we've trained ourselves. Refrigerant work on heat pumps and air conditioning is carried out by our Refcom-registered engineers.

How long does a boiler installation take?

A straightforward like-for-like boiler exchange is usually done in a day. Converting to a combi, or relocating the boiler (for example up into the loft), typically takes around three days. We'll tell you what to expect before we start, and keep you updated as we go — one customer noted we "told us exactly what they were doing through the day."

Stage

Cover & after-care

What is the Heat Plan and which tier do I need?

The Heat Plan is our boiler and heating cover. ServiceCare (£120/year) covers an annual service plus priority 7-day call-outs; BoilerCare (£234/year) adds unlimited boiler call-outs including parts and labour; SystemCare (£300/year) extends that to your whole boiler and heating system. All members get priority access seven days a week, 365 days a year. As Sue and Kevin Douglas put it, they "highly recommend MJ Ryder and the Heatplan option."

Is my installation guaranteed?

Yes — eligible boiler installations carry an up-to-10-year workmanship and boiler guarantee, and we register it for you. And the after-care doesn't stop there: as one review said, "there's always someone at the end of the phone if needed."

Do you do landlord gas safety certificates?

We do. Our Gas Safe engineers carry out annual landlord gas safety checks (CP12) on rental properties, issue the certificate, and can service the boiler in the same visit. We can work to your renewal dates so your certificates never lapse.

Stage

Areas & availability

Which areas do you cover?

We cover Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and Wetherby, and the surrounding North Yorkshire villages — Boroughbridge, Spofforth, Follifoot, Pannal, Bishop Monkton, Killinghall and more — from our base at Stoneacre in Knaresborough. If you're nearby and not sure, just ask.

What are your hours, and can you help in an emergency?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. Heat Plan members get priority access to our engineers seven days a week, 365 days a year — so if the heating fails on a weekend and you're covered, you're near the front of the queue.
